Harrison Square

What's in a demolition?

Here's a list of things to be accomplished in the demolition as taken from the City's Request for Bids to clear the proposed Harrison Square area.
The Phase 2 area will become a temporary parking lot.  Map of the demolition phases.

  • Demolish and remove all building and appurtenances thereto. Demolition is to be limited to buildings and appurtenances on individual parcels as identified in the "Demolition Phasing Plan Harrison Square Project" and will not include streets or sidewalks within existing street rights-of-way.
  • The Contractor shall not be required to backfill subgrade excavations in any of the demolition phases except for Phase 2.
    • For Phase 2 demolition material used for backfill shall consist of solids only, wood content shall not exceed five percent (5%). All backfill shall be compacted to a minimum of ninety-five percent (95%) modified proctor density. The Phase 2 demolition area is to be used for a temporary parking lot, so demolition in this phase will require this site to be topped-off with 4 inches of compressed gravel or crushed concrete to serve as a temporary parking surface. Final grade on in this site should match existing prevailing grade.  Phase 2 is the purple block on the bottom left of this map.
  • Basement walls and floors shall be removed in their entirety.
  • Fencing shall be installed around each subgrade structure that is not backfilled.
  • Prior to demolition of a building, all sewer and drain lines shall be cut and plugged at the street right-of-way line in accordance with the City of Fort Wayne City Utilities specifications, and shall be subject to inspection before backfilling. Individual service lines serving the buildings to be demolished should be removed in their entirety from the street right-of-way line to the building. It is the Contractor’s responsibility to schedule the required inspections with the City’s New Water and Sewer Permit Office.
  • The Contractor shall call for and receive one (1) inspection by the Allen County Building Department. The inspection shall be made after the basement floor is broken and after the basement walls, etc., are removed.
  • The Project Manager shall meet the contractor at the property site before demolition begins. The Contractor is to contact the Project Manager by phone two (2) days prior to start of each demolition phase. This is to insure that the proper structure (s) designated for demolition are identified. A photograph of each structure must be taken by the Project Manager prior to demolition of each property.
  • Manhole and catch basin castings and fire hydrants shall be protected and left intact.
  • Existing fences shall be removed in their entirety.
  • Trees and other vegetation (exclusive of those in rights-of-way) should be removed in their entirety
  • The Contractor must obtain a demolition contractor's license and a demolition permit at the Contractor's expense.
  • All above-ground and subsurface structural, floor and subgrade elements of the buildings, designating trees, other vegetation and asphalt parking lots at addresses listed on the attached "Demolition Phasing Plan Harrison Square Project" will be demolished by the Contractor.
  • The Contractor must notify the Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service and all utility agencies and companies that have utilities in or near the demolition area, and the Contractor must ensure that all existing utility services have been located and marked before starting any work.
  • The Contractor must coordinate termination of utility lines, pipes and related devices that will not be required after demolition. Except where otherwise specified, the Contractor must terminate all utility service lines and pipes that serve the building in accordance with the requirements of the company that provides each service...
  • The Contractor must use reasonable care to prevent damage to the utilities that will remain in place during and after demolition. The Contractor must repair or replace at the Contractor’s expense any utility lines, pipes and related devices that are damaged by the negligence of the Contractor or the Contractor’s sub-contractors and agents.
  • Except where noted otherwise, all underground utilities and other subsurface structures, including but not limited to all valve boxes, foundation risers, water pipes, sanitary sewer pipes, storm water pipes, and all related structures, shall be removed by the Contractor to a depth of at least five (5) feet below the pre-demolition grade, and capped or terminated in accordance with City of Fort Wayne Utility Department requirements.
  • At the completion of the Contractor’s demolition work the site will be completely clean.
  • The Contractor shall submit documentation to the Commission from the owner of an approved landfill stating that the landfill can legally accept all debris. Contractor shall also be required to submit all trip and landfill tickets verifying total truckloads of debris hauled to landfill for each phase of the demolition project.
